Mushrooms are fungi, not plants. They lack chlorophyll and cannot make food through photosynthesis. They obtain nutrients by breaking down organic materials.
A mushroom is essentially the fruiting body of a fungus. The main organism is the underground/substrate-growing mycelium, made of microscopic hyphae.
Mushrooms can grow on straw, sawdust, wood, agricultural residues, compost and other lignocellulosic wastes.
Cultivation converts low-value agricultural waste into nutritious food, medicinal/functional products and commercially valuable biomass.
Major cultivated species include button (Agaricus), oyster (Pleurotus), shiitake (Lentinula), straw mushroom (Volvariella), enoki (Flammulina), and Reishi (Ganoderma).
Successful cultivation requires good genetics, quality spawn, appropriate substrate, moisture, temperature, pH, oxygen/CO₂, humidity, hygiene and correct fruiting triggers.
Mushrooms have nutritional value because they provide protein, dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds, while generally being low in fat.
Medicinal mushrooms contain compounds such as β-glucans, polysaccharides, terpenoids, phenolics and other metabolites. Evidence varies considerably by species, preparation and health outcome; they should not be treated as substitutes for medical treatment.
Mushroom cultivation can contribute to waste recycling, soil improvement, bioconversion and some forms of mycoremediation.
The industry can create employment, rural income and small-scale agricultural opportunities, particularly where agricultural residues are abundant.
The central concept is the proposed “White Agricultural Revolution”: converting agricultural/forest waste → mushrooms → food/functional products → spent substrate → fertilizer/feed/biogas or other applications.

Mushrooms are more than food. They are biological “bioconversion factories” capable of transforming agricultural waste into food, valuable biomaterials and potentially useful environmental products.
